02.05.2010 // DOLLY PARTON + JACK WHITE = RECORD?

Interesting news from Spinner.com:

"Jack White's a busy man. Spinner reported only this week that the White Stripes mainman was already setting his sights on album number two with side project the Dead Weather, which features the Kills' Alison Mosshart. Now Spinner can exclusively report he's been in talks with another female singer-songwriter (he previously worked with Loretta Lynn) who is definitely not to be messed with.

Nashville legend Dolly Parton, promoting her CD and DVD 'Live From London,' told Spinner she'd been approached by White about the possibility of making a record together.

Asked by Spinner whether she had ever considered doing a project similar to Johnny Cash's 'American Recordings' -- a series of discs where he recorded tracks by the likes of Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails under the watchful eye of producer Rick Rubin -- Parton admitted there had been some interesting recent offers.

"Well, I have been approached [by] ... Jack White," she tells Spinner. "I've thought about doing it with [Jack]. He seems to be a fan but who knows. You never know what I might do. Every now and then I get offered those things, and I know if and when the time is right, I'm certainly not opposed to doing that. I usually have a set notion of where I'm headed with a certain project and what I want to get out of it. But Lord only knows what I might do when I get a chance to sit down and think about it."

Here's hoping."

02.05.2010 // JACK PLAYS SURPRISE SHOW AT "HIS HOUSE"

Taken from NME.com:

"Jack White played a surprise show last night (February 4) at his new Third Man music venue in Nashville.

The show was in support of Dex Romweber Duo - whose new material he recently produced.

The White Stripes man treated the 250-strong crowd to an impromptu solo rendition of one of the pair's songs before they played their full set.

"Thank you for coming to my house," White said, before playing the song on his Gretch acoustic guitar. He then retired to behind the mixing desk to watch the show.

Later White loaned the pair his guitar after they broke some strings during the show.

Fans could by vinyl recordings of the gig – which were pressed up in a room next to the venue as the show ended. White has announced that all gigs that take place at the venue will be available to buy as live albums in the same manner.

See Thirdmanrecords.com for more information."

02.01.2010 // AN INTERVIEW WITH WANDA JACKSON

Wanda Jackson's single on Third Man Records was released on January 26th. Black Book Magazine recently issued an interview with Jackson, who discusses, among other things, her experience recording with Jack:

"How has it been working with Jack?
So far I have been very pleased. Jack is very protective of his work and I made the mistake of telling people about recording with him and of course it was printed.. He keeps quiet until he’s ready. But I was excited! It was great working from Jack’s home. He records analog believe it or not! No electronic things, he played the real horns, every instrument was live. I said to him, “Jack, I’m putting myself in your hands because you’re very successful, creative and talented and I just want to trust you. The songs that you think would be good for me to record, you know best.”

What do you think of Jack’s music?
It’s not the kind of stuff I’d go out and buy. But he said he was a big fan, and I said, “Well, darn, Jack, I’ll take a chance!”"

Check out the complete interview here.

01.20.2010 // FIRST U.S. SHOWING OF WHITE STRIPES DOCUMENTARY

The White Stripes will be showing off their documentary, "Under Great White Northern Lights" at this year's SXSW Festival down in Austin, Texas. The below article is taken from The Austin Chronicle:

"SXSW started as a music fest first, so it's kind of a no-brainer that SXSW Film would make room for movies about music. Hey, you know who makes music and is in a new movie? The White Stripes.

The feature-length documentary, called Under Great White Northern Lights, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival back in September, but the SXSW screening will be the first stateside showing for Emmett Malloy’s film. According to press materials, it’s a “visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th anniversary show in Nova Scotia.”

The press release goes on to say that “[t]he SXSW premiere will set the stage for the enigmatic duo’s first-ever official live album release on March 16, featuring 16 songs on both vinyl and CD, as well as the film.” We’re going to now kick open the door to Wild Speculation and Irresponsible Rumor-Mongering to wonder out loud if this means Jack and Meg will be making their way to Austin come March. "

I particularly like the last sentence. I know you do as well. Consider my fingers crossed.

01.12.2010 // ARTICLE ON UPCOMING THIRD MAN RELEASES

CMJ.com posted a new article talking about various Third Man Records releases, including the upcoming releases of Wanda Jackson and the Black Belles:

"Jack White named his Third Man label as a tribute to a one of his favorite noir films (a similarly titled Orson Welles thriller), but considering that White has three bands and a family yet still found the time to produce, record and release 21 vinyl singles since Third Man started at the beginning of 2009, it seems reasonable to suspect that the label title is also a hint at how many Jack Whites are needed to maintain such a workload. As White, himself, admits on a call to CMJ during a break from sessions for Dead Weather's second album, "I wish I could clone myself." But even without some technological twins, White seems to handling things just fine. In fact, he says his attempt to bring spontaneity back to the music industry is going even greater than he thought it would.

"Whenever we release something, we have people around the block. To buy vinyl! It’s a wonderful thing!" White says with infectious glee. "Whenever we hear about a band, if we heard they did a good show the night before, we'll get 'em in here to make a record." He says that Third Man is hoping to soon add a live venue, and all shows performed there will be recorded and eventually available for purchase, "so the whole thing will pay for itself."
